The assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984 and of her son Rajiv Gandhi, in 1991, are two of the most emotionally-charged incidents of India's post-Independence history. Mrs Gandhi was shot dead by two of her Sikh bodyguards in retaliation for Indian troops attacking Amritsar's Golden Temple, while Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber, in response to his decision as prime minister to deploy Indian peacekeeping forces in northern Sri Lanka.
