In the film’s original draft, the climactic battle sees the Empire’s technology-driven army overrun by a bunch of primitive furballs - Wookiees. But Lucas decided that Wookiees were too advanced and sophisticated - he needed a less evolved species: Ewoks. His brief to art director Joe Johnston was “They’re little furry guys, they carry spears, they run through the woods.” But after Johnston and his team produced hundreds of Ewok sketches, Lucas was unhappy. “Let’s make them cuter,” he said. Johnston took Lucas at his word. “I did one so cute, it looked like the teddy bears’ picnic,” Johnston recalled. “It had little ears and was wearing a little bonnet.
