If you only had to spend 30 minutes in a tube to reach LA from SF, you could realistically live in either city and commute to the other. Hell, if you were living in LA, you might get to work in SF quicker than you would get to the other end of your own city in a car. In a way, this could really start to blur the lines of what it means to be a resident of either place. Imagine the same tech applied to other cities on the east coast: SF and LA are 381 miles apart and it takes 30 minutes. Extrapolate that to NYC and Washington DC and you could shuttle back and forth in 18 minutes — quicker than it would take you to reach Brooklyn from uptown Manhattan. This kind of transportation could revolutionize WHERE we live the same way cars did, by giving us a much broader radius of what’s considered ‘close.’
