The highest earners DO pay a higher percentage of federal taxes. The shape of the curve(except at that extremely top end) shows a progressive increase of percentage with income. Earners in the $100-200k category pay less than half as much (in percentage) as the 500k plus categories. Seems to me as if the tax system works well in the vast majority of cases, unless you believe that top earners need to pay more then 25% of their AGI to the Federal government.
